Iowa City Shiatsu & Massage Therapy Policies

Background and Training
I have been practicing massage therapy since 1997. I completed an 800 hour course of study at The Shiatsu Clinic & School in Iowa City, Iowa. My primary training was in Focused Touch Shiatsu under the tutelage of, and developed by, James Luth. I have extensive additional training in a variety of modalities, but generally use an integrative approach which includes Swedish massage, Deep Tissue massage, and Trigger Point therapy along with Acupressure.

Massage Therapy Can Benefit People Who…
• exercise regularly or play sports
• want to manage everyday stress, anxiety and tension
• suffer chronic musculoskeletal and/or joint pain
• have sciatic pain
• experience chronic headaches
• have trouble sleeping
• have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia
• are pregnant
• have high blood pressure
• are recovering from injury or surgery
• experience carpal tunnel pain or thoracic outlet pain
• have plantar fasciitis

Client/Practitioner Expectations
I’ll ask you to fill out a brief physical history form at your first session, and speak with you about the reason for your visit. I will ask you questions to help develop a plan for your massage. Your privacy and confidentiality are maintained at all times. During the session, you may remain clothed if you wish. Or, you may undress and be covered with sheets and/or towels, uncovering the part of the body to be worked on. There is no sexual intent during any massage session and genitals are not massaged.

You may begin lying face up (supine) or face down (prone), depending on the purpose of the session. If the session focuses on a particular injury, that part of your body is generally worked on first. When receiving massage for general relaxation, your back and neck are typically worked on first, followed by your extremities.

You may ask for specific parts of your body to be worked on, or not worked on, and are encouraged to discuss this with me at the beginning of each session. During strict shiatsu sessions no oil or lotion is used. Oil or lotion is used during integrative massage sessions.
.
During your session you are encouraged to relax and to inform me immediately if anything makes you uncomfortable. You may talk during your session or remain quiet if you prefer. Sessions vary in length. I offer sessions in 15 minute increments up to a 90 minute massage. You may be sore for a day or two after a massage. Be sure to tell me if you are sore for longer than two days. We may need to adjust our plan for your next massage.
• I will not work on a person who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• I will not tolerate sexual harassment.

Appointment Policies
• Please arrive 5-10 minutes before your appointment time. I try to be timely and hope you will too.
• Your first appointment will typically last 15 minutes longer than scheduled.
• If you are late for your appointment, the session will still fall within the allotted time scheduled.
• If I am late for your appointment, the session lasts for the full time allotted or the rate is reduced.
• If you wish to cancel an appointment, please do so 12 hours or more before your scheduled time. You can phone or text me at     (319)936-0494. You can also cancel online at my web site. This way I may be able to fill the spot with another customer. (Since I’m in business for myself, I don’t earn a wage unless I am working!)
• I take phone calls and text messages between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. when I am not with a client. If you get my voice mail, leave a message and I’ll return your call as soon as I am finished with my current client, usually within an hour or so.
• Emergency cancellations are always respectfully granted.
• If I need to cancel an appointment, I will try to do so the day before it is scheduled.
• All appointments take place at 2418 Towncrest Drive, Iowa City, Iowa, unless another location is agreed upon.
• All sessions are by appointment only.

Fees

• I DO provide detailed receipts which are accepted on many flexible spending health accounts.
